That won’t work.

“That won’t work. It’s more complicated than that.”

I’ve heard this statement a lot in my time.

And for the person speaking, it’s their reality. Their truth. Not the truth.

Next time that happens,
don’t try to "handle it",
don’t persuade.

Acknowledge their mental barrier. Inquire. Ask them what makes it more complicated.

Their answer will likely,
not be what you were thinking,
not what "handling" would address.

Let them talk.
Inquire deeper.
Still don’t persuade.

Invite them to explain how the complications need to be addressed… while still keeping your proposed outcome intact.

Why?

Because when someone says “It’s more complicated than that,” they’re flagging a potential mistake, one you’re about to make if you persuade and push. And there’s nearly always a positive intention behind that kind of comment.

And in your rush to get,
a solution over the line,
you ignore it.

Then it comes back to bite you later on. Resistant and obstructive stakeholders. Maybe even a lost contract.

All because you didn't do the simplest thing.

Stop. Listen. Learn.

That's not complicated, is it?
