Want a simple idea that will help you stand out from the crowd?
I learnt this from a team in a hotel room in York, England.
It was the first offsite I'd facilitated ...
... and I didn't know what I was doing back then.
So, this idea was stumbled upon by accident. But I've used the same intervention dozens of times since. And it works every time.
Ask your team 'what's predictable?' at an offsite event.
- Too much caffeine.
- The graveyard slot after lunch.
- A very late night in the hotel bar.
You'll have been to one of these events so can add to this list.
Then the team was asked for 'what's possible?' at an offsite event.
- Meet the hotel chef and change the lunch menu.
- Improve a bottle of wine using hypnotic suggestion.
- A post-dinner city walk to the Kings Arms. York's flood pub.
A new list emerged. With some very interesting ideas and actions.
That possibility thinking took over and I used it to guide the rest of the event. In the process, the team found their enthusiasm for the 'predictable vs possible' mindset.
We started asking more possibility questions, like these:
- What level of team performance was possible?
- What exceptional experiences were possible for clients?
- How much could they smash their company sales targets?
And when they got back to their office they implemented the answers. Team performance soared. How they worked with clients significantly improved. And the growth of their business was extraordinary.
It's a simple idea.
So, what's predictable for you today? And what's possible? "
